Driver identified in Benson County fatal

A Maddock, N.D., man has died following an early Wednesday morning crash, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

A Maddock, N.D., man has died following an early Wednesday morning crash, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at 12:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 281, mile marker 153, about six miles south of Minnewaukan, in Benson County.

Willard Westad, 43, was driving a 1997 Jeep Cherokee southbound on U.S. Highway 281 about six miles south of Minnewaukan when the driver failed to negotiate a left hand curve.

Westad drifted right, overcorrected, which caused the Jeep to travel across the roadway and roll in the east ditch.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
