Jack Bietz and Tommy Rockis were in a league of their own on Sunday.

The Jamestown College golfers shot a 73 and 74, respectively, to sit atop the field in the opening round of the Jamestown College Invitational at the Jamestown Country Club.

“I’m very, very happy with Tommy and Jack,” JC coach Dustin Jensen said. “They did exactly what we hope for. They put the other three guys on the team on their backs and carried them around the golf course today.”

It didn’t go nearly as smooth for the rest of the men’s team, which wasn’t able to get any of its bottom three golfers to score in the 70s. The Jimmies are in second place with a 313, one stroke behind leader Northern State (S.D.). The tournament concludes today with play starting at 9 a.m.

“As a team, we’re fighting with a couple of double bogeys,” Jensen said. “We can’t seem to find a way to minimize their mistakes. One mistake and it snowballs. We’re not making bogeys; we’re making doubles and triples.”

Kameron Hunter (82), Tyler Baukol (84) and Chris Rochon (86) rounded out the men’s scores for JC, which still holds an eight-stroke lead over Bismarck State College for second.

The JC women were led by Ashley Barnhart, who fired an 89 and sits in fifth place.

“It’s nice to have a freshman come out and just be consistent,” Jensen said. “The ladies from Minot have a very good golf squad, and she can keep up with them.”

Minot State flexed its muscles, as the Beavers currently have all five of their golfers in the top 10. They shot a blistering 343 to lead second-place JC by 46 strokes. MSU’s Rebecca Heintz holds the overall lead, carding an 80.

JC had two teams named orange and black in the meet. Nicole Stein (96) also came in under 100 and is tied for 10th.

“They didn’t play terrible; they just didn’t play well,” Jensen said.

Jensen said he expected inflated scores because of an adjustment he made. The women used the longer tees in an effort to get the Jimmies ready for their conference meet in Texas. He estimated the women added another 600 yards to their playing field.

“Up here, there are pretty short golf courses,” Jensen said. “Down there, we’re gonna see longer golf courses. It was a big change.”
