A poor performance followed by a solid one ended in a split decision for the Jimmies on Saturday in Madison, S.D.
Jamestown College dropped its opener 3-1 to Ashford College (Iowa) in a 9 a.m. start, but followed with a 3-1 win over Mayville State to finish up 3-1 at the A.I.I. Jamboree.
“We didn’t perform at a level we’re capable of. We were just really flat against Ashford. I don’t know the reasons for that, but we didn’t have a lot of energy and that was disappointing,” JC coach Jon Hegerle said. “I thought we did play really well against Mayville with the exception of the second set. We had a little more fire and were able to end it on a good note.”
The Jimmies, now 13-3, have back-to-back home matches on Friday (Valley City State) and Saturday (Dakota Wesleyan) both starting at 7 p.m.
Ashford 3, JC 1
Ashford’s lineup featured three 6-foot-3 players and that size gave the Jimmies problems.
“They did a nice job. We couldn’t get anything going. They did not make a lot of mistakes and they put a lot of pressure on us,” Hegerle said.
The Jimmies won the second set, but the Saints took the final two.
Katie Lee had 32 more digs after amassing 38 in Friday night’s win over South Dakota Mines. Sarah Becker had 13 kills despite a bad cold.
JC 3, MSU 1
The Jimmies finished the weekend strong.
Tied 1-1 with the improved Comets, Jamestown College controlled the final two sets 25-14 and 25-17.
“I thought we served well in the last much, but we didn’t pass particularly well all weekend,” Hegerle said. “That’s part of the inconsistency that tends to creep in with us. We just have to get back into the gym and get better at being more consistent.”
Becker pounded down 16 more kills. Zent (13), Kaitlyn Rogalla (12) and Janna Johnson (11) were in double figures attacking. Kelsey Deragisch dished out 27 assists and Lee’s 13 digs were team-leading.
