Secretary of State: Calls about absentee voting a hoax

The North Dakota Secretary of State’s office is warning voters that phone calls informing them that absentee voting is illegal in the state are a hoax and should be disregarded.

The North Dakota Secretary of State’s office is warning voters that phone calls informing them that absentee voting is illegal in the state are a hoax and should be disregarded. Al Jaeger, secretary of state, issued a press release on the problem Tuesday that said his office had received more than a dozen calls from voters.

“We have received at least one call on this in Stutsman County,” said Linda Chadduck, deputy auditor for Stutsman County. “The staff referred them to the Secretary of State’s office.”

Chadduck said it was unknown how wide spread the hoax had spread but it wasn’t deterring voters.

“We will have close to a thousand absentee ballots ready to mail out early next week,” she said. “The ballots will go out to voters as soon as they are received and proofed.”

Absentee ballot applications are available at the Auditor’s Office at the courthouse, on the Internet at www.co.stutsman.nd.us or by calling 252-9035.
