Two killed in semi crash

Two people were killed in a collision with a semi truck 13 miles west of Cando, N.D., at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol has not yet released the names of the victims.

The patrol said a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 24-year-old Belcourt, N.D., man was headed east on N.D. Highway 17.

A 1985 semi truck with an empty hay rack trailer, driven by Dana McIntyre, 41, of Westhope, N.D., had entered the highway from a field going west on N.D. Highway 17.

The Chevrolet failed to negotiate a curve and entered the westbound lane. The semi moved to the right, avoiding the car, but the car continued and struck the rear tires of the trailer, causing the semi truck to jackknife, the patrol reported.

The semi entered the north ditch, coming to rest on its wheels, partially on the road. The Chevrolet spun counterclockwise and entered the south ditch, coming to rest on its wheels.

The 24-year-old driver of the car and one of his two 19-year-old female passengers, all of Belcourt, were pronounced dead at the scene. The other 19-year-old woman was taken by air ambulance from the scene to Trinity Hospital, Minot. McIntyre was uninjured.

The Cando/Rugby Rural Fire Department, Rugby Ambulance and the Towner County Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The patrol is still investigating the crash.
