Late score lifts Jimmies over Comets

The Jimmies responded when their backs were against the wall.
Down 20-14 to Mayville State with less than four minutes to play, Jamestown College delivered a game-winning drive, all on the ground, to rally for a 21-20 win Saturday afternoon.
Running backs Lance Johansen and Matt Mithaugen followed the push of the offensive line with Johansen delivering the game-tying score from 23 yards out with less than 2 1/2 minutes to play. Craig Anderson followed with the extra point to put the Jimmies in front.
It did not come easily or aesthetically pleasing for Jamestown College (2-3), but it was a win nonetheless.
Mayville State, which came into the game 3-1, went ahead on back-up quarterback John Hoppe’s 5-yard touchdown run with 5:36 left in the fourth.
But the Jimmies put together a 7-play, 85-yard drive with all seven plays coming on handoffs to Johansen and Mithaugen on the game-winning drive.
The JC defense forced a 4-and-out series by the Comets on the ensuing possession to end it.
For the third straight week, the Jimmies pounded the ball with the running game.
Johansen cleared the century mark for the third straight outing, piling up 110 yards on 24 carries. Mithaugen, who came into the game with a sore hip, showed no ill effects with 96 yards on 16 carries as the Jimmies gained 233 of their 384 yards of offense on the ground.
The JC defense allowed 20 points for the first time in three games, but a huge stand late in the second quarter might have been a game-saver.
After the Comets intercepted a Gus Ramasco pass and returned it to the JC 3-yard line, Mayville State was rebuffed and turned the ball over on downs just before halftime.
Andrew Hammond had a team-high nine tackles, including a sack for the Jimmies. Dillon Kelly also had a sack and J.T. Petsch registered eight stops.
The Jimmies (2-4) are off Saturday. Dickinson State comes to Rollie Greeno Field on Oct. 13 for homecoming.
