CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — John Crockett rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns as North Dakota State kicked off its Missouri Valley Conference schedule with a 33-21 victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday night.
Crockett scored on a 3-yard run late in the second quarter and from 6 yards early in the third. Brock Jensen added 243 yards passing, including a 19-yard touchdown to Kevin Vaadeland in the fourth quarter, for the Bison (4-0), who haven’t lost a road game since the 2010 season.
The Panthers (1-4, 0-2) pulled within 20-14 midway through the third when Sawyer Kollmorgen hit Wes Smith for a 27-yard score. Later, though, Kollmorgen threw an interception to set up Vaadeland’s touchdown.
Kollmorgen added a 20-yard TD to Terrell Sinkfield in the final minute and finished with 213 yards passing, while David Johnson had 85 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Cal Poly 35, UND 17
GRAND FORKS (AP) — Thanks to a late offensive outburst by Cal Poly, including a game-sealing score by Deonte Williams, the Mustangs were able to earn a 35-17 victory Saturday night over North Dakota.
Williams rushed 19 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns, his most important score coming on an 18-yard run with 3:25 left to give Cal Poly the lead for good.
Cal Poly (4-0, 2-0 Big Sky) stayed perfect in its new-found conference, making its Big Sky debut last week with a 28-20 win over UC Davis.
Shortly after Andre Broadous gave the Mustangs a 28-17 lead with a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:54 remaining, North Dakota (3-2, 1-1) quarterback Marcus Hendrickson was sacked by Jake Irwin, fumbling the ball on the Fighting Sioux’s 24. Sullivan Grosz recovered for Cal Poly, his second fumble recovery of the night, and two plays later, Williams scored, ending UND’s hope for a comeback.
