The ideal situation has worked out for Jamestown High School freshman Sierra Bennion.
Heading into Day 1 of the Class A state girls golf meet, JHS coach Dean Kraft said he’d like to see Bennion finish the first round near the top of the leaderboard and play her way into the final group of golfers vying for an individual state championship.
Mission accomplished.
Bennion fired a first-round score of 79 over the opening 18 holes at Mandan’s Prairie West Golf Course on Monday, as the JHS standout is currently two strokes off the lead and is tied for second with Fargo Davies’ Kathleen Marsh.
Fargo North’s Annie Twells is all alone out front after carding a 77, but with Bennion and Marsh nipping at her heels, the three should provide an interesting final round today. The trio will be in the final group of golfers to hit the tee today. Play resumes at 9:30 a.m.
Bennion has taken a liking to Mandan’s Prairie West this season. She won her first high school tournament there Sept. 11, and recently took second there at the West Region meet last week.
Bennion’s round of 79 on Monday is over two strokes better than her average score this season of 81.5. Bennion could have a chance at chasing JHS history today, as former Blue Jay standout Laura Kraft won three straight Class A girls golf titles to finish out her prep career for Jamestown.
Being only a freshman, Bennion has put herself in position to take a crack at four.
As a team, the Blue Jays fared fairly well. The team carded a 390 on Day 1 and sits eighth out of the 12 teams.
Jamestown’s Maria LeFevre finds herself in a tie for 31st after a round of 97. Sarah Azure is tied in 55th for the Jays with a 106.
Kaitlin Mullowney (108), Savannah Kramlich (112) and Mara LeFevre (129) rounded out the Blue Jays in the field. Mullowney is tied in 59th place.
Fargo Davies has a 13-stroke lead for the team title at 330. Bismarck Century and Fargo Davies are currently tied for second at 343.
