Mayville State’s much improved team playing in front of a tuned-up home crowd couldn’t slow down the Jimmies.

Jamestown College got its third win of the season over the 18-7 Comets with a convincing 3-0 victory Wednesday night.

The Jimmies improved to 16-3 and further cemented their hold on the No. 2 spot in the Independent Conference rankings. Mayville State is third.

“This was the third time we’ve played them and it took four sets the first two times, so it was nice to get it done in three,” JC coach Jon Hegerle said. “They had a rowdy crowd that was taking some jabs at our players throughout that we thought was kind of humorous. But the girls stayed focused. I thought they were ready to play tonight.”

The Jimmies, who have lost just once since late August, rolled over the Comets 25-21, 25-17, 25-19.

“I thought we really served and passed well,” Hegerle said. “We did give up a couple runs in the first two sets and let them get back in the game. … But I never felt like the players panicked. They were pretty composed and steady the whole match.”

Kaia Buck and Kelsey Deragisch combined for 40 assists in just three sets with 21 and 19, respectively. The Jimmies had 10 aces, five of them by Emilee Schutta.

The attack was balanced per usual with six players with five kills or more. Katie Zent and Sarah Becker each had 10.

“We’re a good enough team to where if we play consistent we’re going to put pressure on teams and have a good chance to be successful,” Hegerle said. “This was a good night for us.”

The Jimmies are back on the road this weekend, playing Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, S.D., on Friday before a match against Northwestern (Iowa) Saturday in Orange City.
