Walentine, Namminga to present recital

The Jamestown College Department of Music will present a recital by Richard Walentine, baritone, and Jaime Namminga, piano, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in the Reiland Fine Arts Center’s DeNault Auditorium. The recital is free and open to the public.

The program features all British songs, including a performance of Gerald Finzi’s cycle of songs on Thomas Hardy poetry called “Earth and Air and Rain.” Other works to be performed include Bennett’s “The Mouse and the Bumblebee,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard,” and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “I am the very model of a Modern Major-General” from “The Pirates of Penzance.”

Walentine is professor and chair of the Department of Music at Jamestown College. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and his DMA from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In addition to his applied voice studio, he teaches classes in diction, song and opera literature, vocal pedagogy, performance workshop, opera history, harmony/theory and music appreciation.

Walentine is known for his interpretation of French Art Song, comedic musical theater roles and the patter roles of Gilbert and Sullivan. He is currently District Governor for the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Namminga received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota and her Master of Music degree in collaborative piano from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She received “Outstanding Performer” awards at both institutions. Namminga currently is a full-time lecturer and faculty accompanist at Valley City (N.D.) State University and is also part of the adjunct faculty at Jamestown College. She collaborates equally with vocalists and instrumentalists and has given various performances with other faculty and students in the North Dakota University system. She also has experience with dance accompanying and has worked with numerous choral ensembles.

Namminga resides in Jamestown with her husband, Darin, and daughter, Sophia.
