“I am pleased to help with this very worthy project. Our success will depend on the Jamestown area’s continued willingness to support this critical need,” Nething said.
Nething is the longest consecutive serving state senator in North Dakota, as well as the longest-serving Republican state senator in the U.S. He will retire from that position effective Dec. 1, 2012, after 46 years in the North Dakota Senate.
During his tenure in the Senate, Nething served on legislative committees, and was Senate leader from 1974-1986, president pro-tem from 1997-1998 and past president of the National Conference of State Legislatures from 1985-86.
In the past he has also served as president of Jamestown Rotary, exalted ruler of the Jamestown Elks, past state trustee and chair of the board of trustees of the North Dakota Elks Association, chair of the Elks Grand Lodge Judiciary Commission and chief justice of the National Elks Grand Forum. He served in the Korean conflict and is a Presbyterian church elder.
Nething attended Pingree High School, graduating from Jamestown College and the University of North Dakota’s School of Law. He and his wife, Marjorie, have three children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
“Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this new role. This is our way of acknowledging his understanding of the community, his advice and his wisdom,” said Tim Burchill, CEO of Ave Maria Village.
