Northwestern was a little better late in sets and that was the difference.
The Red Raiders (15-6) handed Jamestown College just its fourth loss of the season, taking the final two games en route to a 3-1 win on Saturday in Orange City, Iowa.
The Jimmies (17-4) got few breaks in the match, unlike the home team, but it was still a disappointing finish.
“When you play good teams you have to play good and we didn’t play good enough against them,” JC volleyball coach Jon Hegerle said. “They were good at the end of sets and we weren’t. … I thought we kind of let it slip through our hands.”
It was the first true road loss of the season for the Jimmies, who dominated the second set 25-16 and had leads in the 20s in the third and fourth, but failed to finish.
“We had a number of unforced errors, missed serves, miscommunication. … We just didn’t seem to be in the moment, and that was disappointing,” Hegerle said.
All three games Northwestern won were decided by two points, including the fourth (27-25).
The Jimmies hit .185, which is low for them. Kaitlyn Rogalla had a team-high 12 kills. Alaina Brown added 10 and Katie Zent nine. Uncharacteristically they had 11 service errors and nine serve receive errors.
“I thought the girls fought hard, we just continually seemed to shoot ourselves in the foot,” Hegerle said.
Brown did serve in six aces. Katie Lee had a match-best 29 digs and Kelsey Deragisch’s 27 assists led the floor.
“We play these types of teams to make sure we have the best chance for success at the end of the season,” Hegerle said. “It showed us we still have things we have to get better at.”
The Jimmies are on the road twice this week — at Dickinson State Tuesday and in Madison, S.D., to play Dakota State Saturday.
