Bears take two: Jimmies fall short against once-beaten RMC

Rocky Mountain College’s soccer teams came to Jamestown Sunday with one combined loss all season.
The Battlin Bears left with the same number of defeats, but they had to work to keep it that way.
The Jimmie women and men both scored first at Rotary Field, but the Battlin Bears answered twice, taking the opener 2-1 and the men’s tilt 3-1.
It was the final home match of the season for the Jimmies with seniors Kara Wahl, Nikki Martineau, Ross Perleberg and Johnathon Lodge honored. Wahl and Perleberg are both former Blue Jays.
RMC 2, JC 1
The Battlin’ Bears have had their way the Jimmies in recent seasons.
That was not the case on Sunday, but the undefeated Bears were able to escape with a win.
Jamestown College scored first, but Rocky Mountain star Kirsty Montignani answered to level it and RMC went ahead later for a 2-1 triumph.
Nevertheless it was another solid performance by the Jimmies, who are enjoying a nice season themselves.
“Obviously our goal was to win, but it was 6-0 when they played last year. I thought we played pretty well. We made a few mistakes and they cost us,” JC coach Nick Becker said. “Our goal was to shut down No. 9 (Montignani). That’s hard to do, she ended up getting that first one.”
The Jimmies (7-5-1) jumped out front 1-0 on a goal from freshman Lexie Starceski in the 23rd minute. Jolynn Warnes got an assist from her familiar left-side spot.
Rocky Mountain answered at 28:43 thanks to Montignani to square it before going up 2-1 at the 36:35 mark.
Rocky Mountain had more shots on frame, but the quality chances were pretty equal the rest of the way, including a late flurry by the Jimmies, but they could not quite find the equalizer.
“We had a few chances we didn’t capitalize on. It was close there at the end, but not close enough,” Becker said.
Still, it was another encouraging performance for the Jimmies, who already have two more wins than they had all last season.
“I thought everybody played pretty well,” Becker said. “We’re a pretty disciplined team and the girls always play hard. I’ve really liked how much effort we play with. Our work rate is really good. The girls play hard.”
Brooke Winson and Kara Wahl got high marks against the Bears. Wahl was charged with marking Montignani, a native of Scotland, who now has 18 goals for the 10-0-1 Bears — third most in the NAIA.
Sunday’s game was the final one at home for the Jimmies. They’re off until Oct. 15 when they travel to St. Paul to play Northwestern (Minn.).
RMC 3, JC 1
The JC men came roaring out of the gates.
After having a goal disallowed on an apparent blown offsides call, the Jimmies went up 1-0 when Jack Keeling fed George Gauld perfect on a break up the field. The feed by Keeling was right on the boot of Gauld, who ripped it home for an early 1-0 lead, which probably should have been their second goal less than 18 minutes into the game.
After sustaining the early punch from the Jimmies, the Bears got a foot hold as the game progressed and eventually leveled it when Brandon Loeffler scored late in the half.
The Jimmies, who lost for just the second time in 12 matches, but second straight overall, were dealt a tough blow when ace midfielder Keeling suffered a leg injury and did not return shorty after the intermission.
The Battlin Bears, who improved to 10-1-1, went ahead with 20 minutes left when the Jimmies could not clear the ball and Oliver Gore blasted it top shelf for 2-1 lead. It stayed 2-1 until late when RMC iced it on Gore’s second of the game.
The Bears had seven shots on goal to the Jimmies’ five.
Jamestown College does not play again until Oct. 16 when they travel to Moorhead to face Concordia.
