Coats for Kids distributed

Cool weather has started people thinking about proper winter weather attire and the holiday season. The Salvation Army in Jamestown dealt with both those needs Monday.
“We started distributing Coats for Kids and we started the Angel Tree Program at the same time,” said Lt. Teresa Brecto, Salvation Army staff in Jamestown. “We wanted to do both at the same time so that families only have to make one trip.”
Brecto said the Coats for Kids program is sponsored by Ave Maria Village and One Hour Martinizing as well as the Salvation Army. She said the program has run about 50 years in one form or another.
“We have coats and jackets from infants through adult sizes,” she said. “We have things to help out the whole family including gloves, mittens and scarves as well.”
Fourteen families received winter clothing Monday.
The Angel Tree program allows parents to list their children in the program. People in the community then purchase a gift for the child.
“The parents have to have at least joint custody of the child,” Brecto said. “And a child can only participate in one holiday gift program to give as many children as possible a chance to participate.”
Brecto estimates they have about 200 coats remaining after the first day of distribution. The Coats for Kids pickup and Angel Tree hours are from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Salvation Army offices.
