Bravo to local Coats for Kids program, backers

*Bravo to the local Coats for Kids program. The program distributes items including coats, jackets, scarves, mittens and gloves to families in need of winter gear. The distribution began this week and continues today from 10 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army. And bravo to Ave Maria Village, Martinizing Dry Cleaning and the Salvation Army for sponsoring this worthy program.

*Bravo to Jamestown’s increase in taxable sales and purchases in the latest results released. The state Tax Commissioner’s Office reported that Jamestown’s taxable sales and purchases rose about $4.5 million during the second quarter of 2011 to the same time in 2012. The office reported from April through June 2011 to the same months in 2012, taxable sales and purchase rose from $63.6 million to $68.1 million.

*Bravo to Marilyn Hagerty, longtime Grand Forks Herald columnist, who received the 2012 Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media this week. The award honors Hagerty for working for more than 60 years in journalism and becoming a national figure after writing her now-famous review of the new Olive Garden restaurant in Grand Forks. The review went viral on the Internet.

*Bravo to city and Stutsman County officials for working to address issues that may impact the area with the expected increase in development.

*Bravo to area students who’ve had fun with fitness through the “Adventure to Fitness” program. Several classes in Gussner Elementary School are taking part in the program and Montpelier Public School students previously participated. The schools’ classes were selected for awards through the program, which encourages exercise in fun ways while students learn about staying healthy.
