GRAND FORKS (AP) — Ten neighbors of a North Dakota farmer who is battling cancer have banded together to harvest his sugar beets.

The beets belong to Manvel’s Thomas Ronan, who is recovering from surgery to treat the cancer. His treatment kept him out of the field.

The volunteers harvested about 65 acres of beets with five harvesters, four roto-beaters and several trucks.

Donn Knutson, one of Ronan’s neighbors, said the volunteers jumped at the opportunity to work. He told the Grand Forks Herald, “It’s just something you do when a friend needs help.”
