Kiwanis installs new officers

Immediate Past Lt. Gov. Darlene Vander Vorst attended the Oct. 8 Kiwanis meeting to install new members. She spoke about Kiwanis and emphasized the roles of the newly elected officers.

Sandy Franke led the meeting with 20 members attending. There was one guest, Dr. Alissa Hanson, who will soon become a Kiwanis member. Chuck Axtman led the group singing a cappella in Don and Sharon Caine’s absence.

Salvation Army Lt. Mitch Brecto said that the food shelves are quite bare at this time. Discussion was held on helping more to get food on the shelves. Sandy Wilhelm collected “Happy Dollars” for the Salvation Army.

Jim Boatman, treasurer, went over the new annual proposed budget for 2012-2013 and explained changes. Secretary Kenrad Pederson will have the Kiwanis Membership Manual done for the next meeting. Jan Barnes, chair of young children: Priority One, announced that because the Evenstart Program was no longer in operation, the funds will go to Community Action for the Backpack Program. This is a program in which children’s backpacks are filled with food for the weekend.

Bob Welsh will introduce Harley Trefz, chairman of the Jamestown Planning Commission, to speak at the Oct. 22 noon luncheon meeting at the Lantern Room. He will speak about some of the new happenings in the area.
