Grant to provide service on 2 ND reservations

A $3.5 million federal grant will provide increased home visitation services to children and pregnant women on the Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain Indian reservations in northeastern North Dakota.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A $3.5 million federal grant will provide increased home visitation services to children and pregnant women on the Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain Indian reservations in northeastern North Dakota.

Tim Hathaway, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse North Dakota, says the voluntary home visit program will allow nurses, social workers, mental health specialists and others to visit the homes of pregnant women and children under the age of 2.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that federal funding for bolstering home visitations in high-poverty areas had been included last year through the state Health Department, but it was cut from the governor's budget after some legislators objected it would commit the state to future spending.

Prevent Child Abuse North Dakota and other organizations then applied directly for the federal grant.
