Fargo senator protests ND bishop's election letter
A Democratic state senator says a letter meant for reading at North Dakota Roman Catholic church services is intended to support Republicans.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Democratic state senator says a letter meant for reading at North Dakota Roman Catholic church services is intended to support Republicans.
Fargo Sen. Tim Mathern says the letter could jeopardize the church's nonprofit status.
Mathern is Catholic. He says he's asked Bismarck Bishop David Kagan to withdraw the letter. Kagan oversees North Dakota's Catholic churches.
The letter says abortion, euthanasia, same-sex marriage and embryonic stem cell research is “never acceptable.”
It doesn't name any candidate or political party. But is says “the positions of the two political parties and the positions of their candidates are well known” on those issues.
A church spokesman says the letter doesn't violate any laws. Christopher Dodson says it outlines Catholic doctrine on political responsibility and doesn't tell anyone how to vote.
