Optimist Club honors athletes

Jamestown High School’s Billie Buchanan, Maya Moltzen and Aaron Ford, along with Jamestown College’s Katie Lee and Craig Anderson, have all been tabbed as athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Jamestown High School’s Billie Buchanan, Maya Moltzen and Aaron Ford, along with Jamestown College’s Katie Lee and Craig Anderson, have all been tabbed as athletes of the week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Buchanan, a senior on the Blue Jay volleyball team, helped the Jays defeat Dickinson last week with 9 kills and one block.

Moltzen, an eighth grader on the Blue Jay girls cross country team, was the top Jamestown finisher at the Andrew Carlson Distance Challenge. She finished 11th overall, covering the 3,000-meter course in 12 minutes, 34 seconds.

Ford, a junior on the Blue Jay boys cross country team, was the top Jamestown finisher at the Andrew Carlson Distance Challenge placing ninth overall. He covered the 4,000-meter course in 14 minutes, 22 seconds.

Lee, a senior nursing major on the Jimmie volleyball team, tallied 102 digs (6.8 per set), passed at 97 percent and recorded 4 aces, while serving at a clip of 94 percent, to lead the Jimmies to a 2-2 record at the Grand View University Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Jimmies defeated No. 20 Viterbo, Wisc., during the tournament.

Anderson, a senior on the Jimmie football team from Hartsville, S.C., continued his great kicking on Saturday in a 13-10 Jimmie victory over Valley City. Anderson punted seven times for 281 yards — a 40-yard average — including one that went 68 yards.

Anderson also converted an extra point in the fourth quarter in addition to some kickoff duties.
