JC rolls in opener

The first shot attempted by a Jimmie this season was long and left, but the backboard deflected the ball straight up into the air before it floated through perfectly for the first three points of the season.

An unconventional 3-point make by Amber Ramlo, and with that, 11th-ranked Jamestown College was off and running to win No. 1 of what they hope will be many this season.

The opener wasn’t a thing of beauty, but it was pretty painless as they rolled past Brandon (Man.) 74-49 in Game 2 of the Jimmie Classic Friday night at the Civic Center.

“Typical first game,” said hoarse-voiced JC head coach Greg Ulland. “Lot of mistakes, lot of things to work on, but a bunch of good things too.”

All 11 players to dress scored, a trait similar to all of Ulland’s team the last 2-plus seasons.

Also typical was a big all-around game from Ramlo, who pulled down a whopping 19 rebounds in 28 minutes of work. The former Blue Jay also had 10 points, four blocked shots and three assists.

“Amber had a heckuva game. She made a lot of plays. Made a lot of things happen.”

Bridget Schuneman was the only other player in double figures with 10.

The Jimmies scored 14 of the first 16 points off the game, but it was an uneven performance offensively the rest of the way.

The pesky Bobcats got within five points midway through the second half and proved hard to put away completely by the Jimmies.

But a quick 10-0 run with 3s by Maggie Seter and Kadie Savage mixed in pushed the lead to 20 where it stayed.

“We have the potential to be good. Clearly we’re not there yet, but you could see it in spurts,” Ulland said. “I have to coach them up in certain areas, but they’re willing to work hard and learn.”

Eight different players made 3-pointers and 10 of the 11 had assists, yet they shot just 37 percent.

“It’s good just to get out and play,” Ulland said. “Now we got film and we get to work on that.”

They have a quick turnaround to Game 2. They host Winnipeg today at 4 p.m. following Mayville State and Brandon.

MSU 88, Winnipeg 76

Mayville State got off to a fast start with a pair of 40-plus point halves en route to a season-opening win over Winnipeg in the opener Friday night at the Civic Center.

Marcisa McMillan led four Comets in double figures with 20 points. Sabrina Rude added 19.

Winnipeg trailed just 46-44 at halftime, but turnovers plagued the Wesmen in the second half. They gave it away 32 times, negating an otherwise solid offensive outing. Megan Noonan’s 18 points were team-leading.
