Jays qualify a pair at Marney Shirley Invite

The Blue Jay girls swimming and diving team qualified two more athletes for state — bringing the team’s total qualifiers to 13 — during the Marney Shirley Invite at the JHS pool on Saturday.
Eighth-grade diver Morgan Mews and freshman diver Erin Hillerud both punched their ticket to state for the Blue Jays. Mews placed 17th out of 34 divers over the weekend with a score of 281.90, while Hillerud came in 18th with a mark of 276.40.
The 2012 girls state swimming and diving meet is slated for next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 9-10) at the Bismarck State College Aquatic and Wellness Center.
As she has all season long, Jamestown’s Alex Lind dominated the diving competition during the Marney Shirley Invite. The defending state champ scored a mark of 436.70, placing her well ahead of second-place finisher Anna Reinholz of Fargo Shanley, who posted a score of 400.90.
Jamestown’s Abby Wanzek placed third (359.20), while the Blue Jays’ Abbie Conlon finished 16th (289.05).
Minot won the invite after scoring a total of 536 team points at the conclusion of all 12 events. The Majettes’ Emily Hamel won the 50 freestyle (25.58).
Jamestown finished fifth in the seven-team invite with a mark of 315.
The Blue Jays’ Annie Hart claimed Jamestown’s second individual title of the day when she outswam the field in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in a time of 1:01.93. Hart, along with Kamie Wagar, Paige Peterson and Camille Kawasaki, posted a fifth-place run in the 200 medley relay (2:01.58).
In a photo finish, Wagar came home third in the 100 butterfly. Wagar’s time of 1:05.29 was just behind Rachel Ford and Ashley Doll, both of Mandan, who each covered the 100 meters in 1:05.24 to tie for the win.
Wagar also finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke, racing a time of 1:17.09. The Jays’ 200 freestyle relay team of Peterson, Hart, Kawasaki and Wager finished fifth (1:48.99).
The Blue Jays will be at Bismarck this Saturday.
