The West Region regular-season championship no longer within its grasp, the Jamestown High School volleyball team set out for the next best thing on Tuesday night — lock up the No. 2 seed.
The Blue Jays did that with relative ease, dominating throughout in a 25-9, 25-11, 25-10 Class A victory at Mandan.
“We came out tough right away,” JHS coach Sara Hegerle said. “Our serving they struggled with. We put pressure on them right away.”
The Blue Jays stretched their roster and again, used 11 players in the win.
“We have a lot of different hitters and our setters are doing a nice job getting all of our hitters a chance to attack,” Hegerle said. “We have 11 kids playing every night. That’s really important and valuable to what we’re accomplishing.”
Siri Jystad had a team-high eight kills to go with four blocks in the win, which puts the second-seeded Blue Jays into a first-round match with seventh-seeded Minot on Nov. 8 in Mandan.
Billie Buchanan had six kills, and Addie Eamon and Jenna Stilwell each added five. Josie Hegerle had 23 assists, while Julina Niemeier had a team-high four aces. All-state libero McKayla Orr had 16 digs and Eamon tallied five blocks.
The Blue Jays swept Minot in the regular season, but Sara Hegerle said they can’t afford to look ahead like they did last year, when they fell in the first round and lost in loser-out action the next day.
“This year, I guarantee we’re not looking past round 1,” Hegerle said. “We’re not making the same mistake twice. We’re gonna compete hard against Minot.”
