Local athletes cited for awards

Alex Lind and Michael Sorensen of Jamestown High School and Amy Fearnside and Matt Mithaugen of Jamestown College have been named Athletes of the Week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.

Lind, a senior diver for JHS, broke the team and pool record during weekend action at the JHS pool.

Sorensen, a senior cross country runner, placed 55th at the state meet to lead the Blue Jays with a time 17:29.

Fearnside, a freshman from Morgan Hill, Calif., on the JC women’s wrestling team, went 5-1 at the Can Am Duals and Can Am Open. She defeated two ranked wrestlers as well. She is currently ranked No. 5 at 109 pounds in the WCWA poll.

Mithaugen, a senior from Fergus Falls, Minn., on the JC football team, ran for 93 yards on 16 carries in the Jimmies’ 35-34 overtime loss to Dakota State Saturday. Mithaugen had touchdown runs of 40-, 8- and 1-yards.
