Bravo to Barron for his genealogy work

The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos this week:

* Bravo to the South Dakota Canine Center and local dog volunteers who are working to give dogs that might otherwise not find homes a second chance to serve as rescue dogs and other service dogs. A SDCC representative recently trained Prairie Paws Rescue members on how to spot traits that make dogs good candidates for this work, such as a strong hunting drive and the ability to focus on an item no matter what else is going on.

* Bravo to George Barron, Jamestown, who was recently honored by the North Dakota State Genealogical Society for his work in genealogy in Stutsman County.

* Bravo to the strong turnout so far for early voting in Stutsman County. As of Tuesday, more than 2,600 people had turned in ballots with absentee voting and early voting. The system is convenient for voters and helps makes it easier for more people to vote.

* Bravo to the Jamestown College Athletic Department, which has been honored with a Five Star Champions of Character Institution Award for the fourth consecutive year. The award is given to schools that meet requirements for character training and community outreach, conduct in competition, academic success and character recognition.

* Bravo to the many candidates who came to meet with local residents at an event sponsored by the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Local Regional Issues Committee.

* Bravo to area groups that provided alternative locations for children on Halloween this week. The community events gave children a safe environment to have fun and gather loot.

* Bravo to North Dakota and South Dakota, both of which are marking their 123rd birthdays this week. The two states became part of the Union on Nov. 2, 1889.
