Eighteen Jewels of the Prairie, a local Red Hat Chapter, met at Jamestown Regional Airport in October for a coffee and coffee cake morning with Matthew Leitner, airport manager. He shared about hanging around an airport as a child, doing whatever he could to get a free airplane ride with someone and altering his lifelong ambition to manage an airport in a town the size of Jamestown. He ultimately finished college, hung on to his dream, applied twice for the manager position in Jamestown and became a mechanic and an airport jack-of-all-trades. He was able to leave Atlanta and get back to where his parents had come from: North Dakota.
He now owns a small plane that he wanted for 20 years, the very plane that he had seen in Stevens Point, Wis., years ago. He told of his goal to fly to all 89 public airports in North Dakota, getting his special passport stamped and earning a leather jacket. He landed in Linton, Gackle, Wishek and Napoleon recently. Jim Boyd, chairman of the Jamestown Regional Airport Authority, stopped by to greet the Jewels and to give a further update on the future of the airport. The group then went from the boardroom to the new terminal where members toured the area and took pictures.
Helen Hample was the October recipient of the Traveling Birthday Doll, Carmen Monaga, a gift from Shirley Richards to the Red Hat Chapter. Names will be drawn from November birthdays in attendance and Carmen will visit another home for a month.
