Regionals heating up

Napoleon, Linton-HMB, Ellendale and South Border all advanced to today’s semifinals of the Region 3 volleyball tournament in LaMoure, after each team survived Monday’s opening round.

The host team, the LaMoure Loboes, brought the defending Region 3 champs, the Linton-HMB Lady Lions, to the breaking point in the second quarterfinal match of the day. But the Lions simply refused to go down after falling in the first two games by identical 25-15 scores.

Nicole Nieuwsma and Kaidra Larson racked up 23 and 15 kills, respectively, while Tiffany Gerving tossed up 48 assists for the winners, helping the Lions roll in the final three games 25-22, 25-23, 15-11.

Courtney Carlson recorded 20 kills and 32 digs form the Loboes. LaMoure’s Megan Good posted a match-high 50 assists.

Napoleon made quick work of the Edgeley-Kulm Rebels in the first match of the day, 25-9, 25-9, 25-19. The Imperials were led by Kendra Weigel’s 26 assists. Hallie Anderson picked up 18 digs for the Rebels.

After falling in a tight 30-28 battle in the opening frame to Strasburg-Zeeland, the Ellendale Cardinals rallied over the next three games, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22, to punch their ticket into today’s semifinals.

Lucinda Stoppleworth slammed home 17 kills and picked up 7 blocks for Ellendale, while her teammates Dacey Fuller (24) and Rachel Herman (20) combined for 44 assists. Ali Wolf and Maddie Kramer paced the Clippers with 16 kills and 27 assists, respectively.

South Border defeated Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal in the final quarterfinal match of the night. Stats were not readily available at press time.

Napoleon will face Linton-HMB tonight at 6 p.m. in LaMoure, while Ellendale will face South Border shortly thereafter to decide Thursday night’s title matchup.

Region 1

Central Cass, Fargo Oak Grove, Northern Cass and Kindred moved into semifinal play at the Region 1 tournament in Oakes.

In the third match, Northern Cass and Oakes split the first two games, but the Jaguars won the next two for a 3-1 win.

Vanessa Johnson had 18 kills and three blocks for Northern Cass. Whitney Ward had 21 digs. Brianna Olson contributed 46 assists.

Coley Warren led the Tornadoes with 17 kills and 13 digs.

Kindred steamrolled over Milnor, not allowing more than 19 points in any game.

Central Cass and Fargo Oak Grove will meet in the first of two semifinal matches today at 6 p.m., after both teams won by 3-0 sweeps to get the tournament started

Central Cass used 13 kills and 2 blocks from Faith Dooley to upend Hankinson 25-17, 25-15, 25-17.

Oak Groves Chelsey Anderson recorded a match-high 12 kills and 14 digs to help the Grovers take down North Sargent 25-23, 25-21, 25-15. Andrea Johnson tossed up 24 assists for the Grovers.

Northern Cass will face Kindred tonight, following the bout between Central Cass and Oak Grove.
