Lions, Mustangs advance

Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock and South Border will play for the Region 3 volleyball championship on Thursday night.

The Lions advanced Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over Napoleon at the tournament held in LaMoure.

In the second semifinal, South Border defeated Ellendale in a five-set marathon.

The Lions took the first two sets and then polished it off 25-22 to defeat the Imperials 3-1.

Nicole Nieuwsma had 19 kills, Kaidra Larson 14 and McKenna Flyberg 13 for the winning Lions. Tiffany Gerving contributed 48 assists, three aces and two kills.

Brenna Schmidt piled up 22 kills and 14 digs for Napoleon. Kendra Weigel dished out 48 assists.

The second semifinal went the distance as South Border nipped Ellendale 16-14 in the fifth set.

The two teams traded set wins with the Mustangs taking the first, third and fifth and the Cardinals the second and fourth.

Madison Schnabel pounded down 32 kills in the win for the Mustangs. Olivia Weber passed out 47 assist. Kalli Scherbenske had 11 digs and 10 kills.

The Cardinals were led by 20 kills from Lucinda Stoppleworth. KaLee Hack had 29 digs.
