The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County, the organization that runs the museum at the Hjemkomst Center, invites all veterans to visit the museum for free from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The museum is currently displaying two exhibits: one on the voyage to Norway and one on the years 1945-1960 in the region.
“The Boom: 1945-1960 in Clay County” captures the period of growth and modernization following World War II. Images, artifacts, and texts may be familiar to many Baby Boomers born before or during this period.
“The Hjemkomst Sagas: A Dream, One Ship, Many Stories” traces the 10-year process of building the Hjemkomst Viking ship, the years leading up to its expedition to Norway across the north Atlantic, and an update on the current lives of the key participants. This exhibit was funded in part by the Minnesota Historical Society through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
In addition, a new, small traveling exhibit called “Peter Bergstrom: Swedish Immigrant Worker and Entrepreneur” is on exhibit in the basement before it goes on tour around the U.S. Bergstrom lived and worked in Moorhead for 30 years after emigrating from Sweden in search of better opportunities to make a living in America. This exhibit was funded in part by the Swedish Cultural Heritage Society of the Red River Valley and the Swedish Council of America.
Regular museum admission for non-veterans is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and college students, $6 for youths 5-17, and free for those under 5.
