Virtuoso Zukerman takes stage tomorrow

Jamestown College’s Performing Arts Series opens at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Reiland Fine Arts Center’s DeNault Auditorium, where Emmy Award-nominated flautist, Eugenia Zukerman will give another of her award-winning performances.

The college’s fine art series has always sought to bring noted performers to the city for its arts season and this year is among its best.

The New York Times reviewed Zukerman’s virtuosity, showering her with high praise.

“Her musicianship is consummate, her taste immaculate, and stage presence sheer pleasure,” it reported.

Zukerman has a “Renaissance Woman’s” reputation. Her education history includes English major at Barnard College and music at Julliard School of music. Her career in music extends from her work with former husband violinist Pinchas Zukerman through her own international performances on the flute. As a journalist, has been with “CBS News Sunday Morning” since 1980, where she profiles artists for the highly regarded broadcast. Her writing gained the program much praise and Emmy nominations for her work.

Her writings include two novels “Deceptive Cadence,” and “Taking the Heat.”

She has been published in “Vogue,” “The New York Times,” “The Washington Post” and “Esquire.” She is editor and contributing writer to the anthology of essays “In My Mother’s Closet,” which includes the writings of accomplished women on their mother-daughter relationships. The anthology includes Renee’ Fleming, Carrie Fisher, Joy Bahar, Judy Collins, Erica Jing and Clair Bloom.

During her early years as a concert artist, she took the Young Concert Artists International Auditions competition. That launched her into the international music set, taking her around the world performing with the likes of Emmanuel Ay, Yo-Yo Ma, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, the Shanghai String Quartet and flautists Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway.

Her accomplishments seem almost impossible, except she has accomplished all the astounding feats listed in her biography. Her appearance is indeed a gift to the city of Jamestown. According to Dr. Richard Walentine, himself a baritone, professor of music and department of music head at Jamestown College, Zukerman’s visit is a special treat for the campus and city. “She’s a Renaissance woman,” he said, and “we are fortunate to have her here.”

Season tickets are available through the above venues as well. The next two Performing Arts Series include Friday, Feb. 22, with the Russell Peterson Jazz Quartet and Saturday, March 23 with Sonic Escape Instrumental Ensemble. Each is set for 7:30 p.m.
