Lady Lions off to state

The Linton-HMB Lions are headed back to the state Class B volleyball tournament, and they left little doubt as to why. In a commanding performance, the Lions stormed past South Border 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 in the championship match of the Region 3 volleyball tournament in LaMoure on Thursday night.

The Linton-HMB Lions are headed back to the state Class B volleyball tournament, and they left little doubt as to why.

In a commanding performance, the Lions stormed past South Border 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 in the championship match of the Region 3 volleyball tournament in LaMoure on Thursday night.

The state Class B tournament is scheduled for Nov. 15-17 in Minot. The Lions finished fourth at the state tournament one year ago in Fargo.

A total of seven Lions recorded a kill in the 3-0 sweep over the Mustangs, with 13 kills by sophomore outside hitter Nicole Nieuwsma. Tiffany Gerving tossed up 31 assists for the Lions.

South Border was led by Madison Scherbenski’s 7 kills and five blocks.

The Lions will face the champion of Region 7 at state next Thursday at the Minot State University Dome.

In the third-place match it was Napoleon surviving a five-set match against Ellendale, which the Imperials dominated late with a 15-2 defeat over the Cardinals in the decider.

Brenna Schmidt and Brianna Wolf led Napoleon with 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while Kendra Weigel tossed up 39 assists. Ellendale received 11 kills from Lucinda Stoppleworth and 15 assists and 17 digs from Rachel Herman.

Region 1

Kellie Schmit helped Kindred power past Fargo Oak Grove 3-0 with a match-high 21 kills and 4 blocks during the championship match of the Region 1 volleyball tournament in Oakes.

Kindred rolled 25-22, 25-16, 25-18, and will face Flasher of Region 5 at the state tourney next Thursday in Minot.

Schmit was later named the Region 1 Senior Athlete of the Year, while Oakes’ Kathy Warren was honored as the region’s coach of the year.

Central Cass bounced back from a 25-21 loss in Game 1 to Northern Cass in the third-place match to win the final three 25-18, 25-17, 25-16.

Faith Dooley led the Squirrels with 12 kills and 4 blocks. Northern Cass was led by Vanessa Johnson’s 15 kills and Brianna Olson’s 36 assists.
