Hazen takes Class A title over W-N-G

GRAND FORKS (AP) — Briar Bornemann rushed for a Dakota Bowl-record 286 yards and scored four touchdowns as Hazen ground out a 55-28 win over Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn Friday in the North Dakota 11A championship football game.
Bornemann scored on runs of 15, 5, 6 and 34 yards for the Bison (10-2), who won their first state title since a Class B crown in 1996.
The rushing record had belonged to Velva’s Wade Kittelson since 1996.
The Bison jumped out to a 29-0 lead before the Sioux (8-5) closed the gap before fading down the stretch.
Hazen set records for points scored and total rushing yards (492).
Quarterback Stetson Carr ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns.
WNG quarterback Hunter Braaten passed for 210 yards and a touchdown and ran for 86 yards and two scores.
Fargo Shanley beats Grafton for state AA crown
GRAND FORKS — Dan Arnold caught two touchdown passes and recovered a fumble in the closing seconds to preserve Fargo Shanley’s 14-8 win over Grafton Friday in the North Dakota 11AA championship football game.
Arnold hauled in TD passes of 59 and 16 yards for the Deacons (10-2), who have won three of the last four state titles. Grafton beat Shanley in last year’s championship game.
The Spoilers (10-2) drove from their own 1-yard line to the Deacons’ 25 with less than a minute to play before losing the ball on a fumble.
Arnold stripped the ball and recovered the fumble. Grafton turned the ball over six times.
Arnold had four catches for 87 yards.
Lunde scored Grafton’s only TD on a 56-yard run. He led the Spoilers with 160 yards rushing.
Bismarck beats Bismarck Century for AAA title
GRAND FORKS — Layne Johs ran for 199 yards and three touchdowns as Bismarck beat Bismarck Century 21-0 on Friday to claim its fourth North Dakota Class AAA football state title in five years.
Johs scored on runs of 29, 49 and 2 yards for the Demons (12-0), who were appearing in their sixth straight championship game. The Demons also defeated the Patriots (9-3) in last year’s championship game.
Century was playing in its second championship game.
Bismarck rolled up 302 yards on the ground and another 52 through the air.
Century never got untracked on offense. It managed just 28 rushing yards and quarterback Jared Fischer was just 5-for-20 for 51 yards passing. He was picked off twice.
Bismarck took a 14-0 lead into the break on Johs’ two long scoring runs in the second quarter.
