When it looked like Peru State College (Neb.) might finally take back the lead, Carly Jensen ended all hope.
The Jamestown College junior from White Bear Lake, Minn., drilled a 3-pointer on a pass from Amber Ramlo with 3 minutes, 49 seconds to go to spark a game-ending 12-3 run in the 11th-ranked Jimmies’ 72-61 win at the Midland (Neb.) Classic on Friday.
“Carly’s shot was one that turned the tide for us,” JC coach Greg Ulland said. “They had momentum at that moment. She shot it pretty well. That was one of the bigger ones. “
Jensen finished 6-of-9 from the floor for a game-high 19 points. The big trey was her fourth of the game. She was also 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
The Jimmies (4-1) got a big game out of their starting lineup, which accounted for 68 of its points. Jensen led four players in double figures. Jamestown native Amber Ramlo had 17, while Kayla Roemmich and Morgan Mathison added 14 and 13, respectively.
The 3-pointer made a big difference for the Jimmies, who finished 8-of-21 from beyond the arc. Conversely, Peru State was just 1-of-7.
“They don’t shoot a lot of 3s,” Ulland said. “I thought the kids did a decent job of stopping the penetration.
“We shoot a lot of 3s; that’s what we do. I’d like to see our percentage a little higher. We’ve got to keep grinding and getting more consistent at that.”
Peru State (4-1) led by as many as nine in the first half before the Jimmies kicked it into high gear, rallying and taking the lead with less than 2 minutes to go on a Ramlo 3-pointer. The shot gave JC a 30-27 lead going into halftime. The Jimmies led the rest of the way.
JC concludes the tournament today, when it meets Tabor College (Kan.) at 1 p.m. Ulland said he got a decent look at Tabor at the tournament.
“They’re gonna pose some problems,” he said. “They have a great transition game. It’s a good matchup for us. It’s gonna be interesting to see how we bounce back on the second day of a doubleheader. The turnaround will be pretty quick.”
