The short-handed Jimmies put up a strong fight against NCAA Division II Augustana Saturday night.
Playing without injured leading scorer Mark Hoge for the third straight game, Jamestown College was within a point with a minute to go, but the Vikings pulled away for a 54-48 season-opening win.
The game did not count in the Jimmies’ win-loss record, but they nearly pulled off an upset over the NSIC’s Vikings.
After scoring just 14 first-half points, the Jimmies (2-3) outscored Augie 34-33 in the final 20 minutes.
Davon Thomas pulled the Jimmies within 49-48 with 1:07 to go, but the Vikings scored the last five points to hang on.
Thomas, Breshion Tucker and Jared Sutherland each had 13 points for the Jimmies. Tucker also passed out three assists. Sutherland knocked down three triples. The Jimmies turned it over just 10 times, but they struggled shooting, making just 30.8 (16-for-52) percent of their shots.
The Jimmies are back on the road next weekend, heading to LaCrosse, Wis., for the Viterbo Classic. They open against Waldorf (Iowa) on Friday.
