Lind repeats in diving

It’s one of the most common inspirational messages in the history of sports, but there’s a reason why it keeps being repeated.
It’s more often than not coming from the breath of a state champion.
“Hard work pays off,” Jamestown High school senior diver Alex Lind said, “and if you don’t work hard, nothing is going to be given to you.”
That simple mantra — hard work pays off — was the backbone of Lind’s inspirational diving career at JHS. Entering the state swimming and diving meet in Bismarck over the weekend Lind hadn’t lost an event since 2010, and she had no plans of breaking that two-year streak in her finale with the Blue Jays.
Lind never trailed as she held the lead after each of her dives on Friday and Saturday, en route to her second consecutive state diving title. She held a comfortable lead over Fargo North’s Tori Meyer after Friday’s prelims 201.40 to 191.80, and she soared in the finals to an overall score of 453.80.
Fargo Shanley’s Anna Reinholz finished a distance second at 397.95.
“The first day went better than last year,” Lind said. “So I was kind of confident going into the second day, and the second day was even better.”
Lind held herself to very high standards all season, and the state tournament was no different. But the more pressure she added to herself, the more it seemed she excelled.
“It just felt as the season went on I just kept progressing,” Lind said. “It was a huge relief. It’s something I’ll definitely remember forever.”
“She did a really good job this weekend,” JHS coach Ben Smith said of Lind. “Last year she didn’t have the lead after the beginning of the first dives. That was a change from last year.
“She performed really well, and after every dive she had the lead both days.”
Jamestown finished ninth out of 14 in the team standings at state with a score of 132, and it’s those teammates that Lind said she’ll likely miss the most.
“They were always there to support me,” Lind said. “I think they did really good. They had been working really hard for it.”
Now that her two-time state diving career is in the books, when asked if it had all sunk in yet Lind’s answer was fairly simple.
“Nope, not really,” Lind said. “Maybe when I start gymnastics tomorrow?”
Lind’s senior diving teammate Abby Wanzek had a nice rebound on Saturday. After Friday’s dives she found herself in 15th with a score of 155.25, but on Saturday she came alive to finish sixth with a score of 368.90.
“Her last three dives she bumped up six of seven places,” Smith said of Wanzek. “The back half of her diving list was particularly strong for her.”
Sophomore Annie Hart was the only Blue Jay swimmer to place in two events at state. Hart finished third in the 100 backstroke (59.89) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (25.48).
Hart had the fourth best time in the backstroke coming into the state.
The Jays’ Paige Peterson took 10th in the 50. The junior entered the tournament seeded 13th in that event.
“(Hart) had a great meet, swam well and had a great attitude,” Smith said. “She really went out there and left it all in the pool. That was really good to see, someone that’s younger. She really stepped up her performance.”
Senior Kamie Wagar also scored a 10th-place finish for the Jays, posting a 1:03.84 in the B final of a very competitive 100 butterfly event. Wagar had the sixth best time in the state entering the meet.
“That was her season best time, so you can’t ask for anything more,” Smith said of Wagar.
As a whole, Smith said he was happy with the Jays performance at state. The team brought 17 members to the tournament.
“They all did really amazing. Everyone improved times and improved their scores,” Smith said. “The girls stepped it up. They did a really good job all season and it was great to see them end it on a high note.”
