Heading into the long football offseason is much easier to take following a win.
Closing up shop emphatically can even build momentum and that’s what the Jimmies seemed to do Saturday against Mayville State.
Jamestown College dominated the Comets every way you can at Rollie Greeno Field, capping the 2012 campaign with a 53-13 triumph, looking crisp on both sides of the ball despite the cold and wet conditions.
“For us seniors, it was the perfect way to go out,” said star running back Lance Johansen. “We wanted to finish the season right. I think we were able to do that.”
Frustrating, narrow losses had been a common theme for the Jimmies. Saturday, the Comets never had a chance.
“This season didn’t go the way we wanted it to, or the way we thought it could, but it was important for us to win today,” said standout senior cornerback A.J. Downs. “For the seniors, we wanted this one pretty bad, and for the guys coming up, hopefully they can carry it into next year.”
The Jimmies piled up 450 yards of offense, and more impressively, did not turn it over in the soggy conditions.
Johansen ran wild to the tune of 226 yards on just 20 carries, which included a galloping 91-yard touchdown run as part of the Jimmies’ 27-point third quarter.
“The line did their job so I was able to do my job,” Johansen said. “They (offensive line) made it pretty easy.”
Matt Mithaugen added three touchdown runs in his final collegiate contest and freshman quarterback Beau Eriksson continued to show promise, completing 12 of 18 attempts, including three TD tosses to sophomore wide receiver Trent Roemmich.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” coach Shawn Frank said. “I thought our coaching staff really had a good plan going in and our guys executed it for the most part.
“From a preparation standpoint I was really happy with how our guys really locked into being ready to go. It meant a lot to our guys, in particular our seniors, to play well today, and they did.”
The JC defense stuffed the Comets all day long. Mayville State, which was coming off a 34-point performance against Dakota State, was limited to 99 yards. C.J. Costello, J.T. Petsch and Jared Mack each had interceptions. Reid Haagenson, Bradley Brooks and Jeremy Cole had one sack apiece.
“It started Monday watching film,” said Costello, who closed his career with another solid game. “We didn’t do anything different. We always try to be really prepared like we were today.”
The Jimmies’ four wins were an improvement by one over the last two seasons. They weren’t far from six or even seven, though. They had two 1-point losses and another by three.
“You can look back on a few games and it is frustrating, but I felt like we worked hard all season and we can take pride in that,” said the All-American Downs. “We did a lot of good things this season and hopefully the guys coming up can take it to the next level in the future.”
