It wasn’t easy, but the Jimmies earned their trip to nationals.
Jamestown College fell in a 2-1 hole to host Mayville State in semifinal action of the Association of Independent Institution Tournament on Saturday, but were able to dig out, rallying to beat the Comets 3-2.
The win iced the trip to nationals, the second ever for the program. They’ll play an opening-round match Saturday on the road.
“Certainly, we’re pretty excited to qualify for nationals,” JC coach Jon Hegerle said. “We know we’ll be on the road, it’s just depending who we’ll play.”
The win over the Comets moved the Jimmies into the championship match, but top-seeded and 19th-ranked Cal State San Marcos was rested and waiting and rolled in three sets.

Down 2-1, the Jimmies forced a fifth set with a 25-20 triumph in game 4.
The Jimmies never trailed in the decisive frame and closed it out 15-8.
“We played a pretty hard-fought match against Mayville,” Hegerle said. “They’re a formidable foe and being down two sets to one I thought our players responded well. Last year we were in a similar position and we ended up losing, so it was good to see our players respond the way they did with the season on the line.”
Kaitlyn Rogalla’s 17 kills led four Jimmies in double figures. Katie Zent added 16. Janna Johnson and Sarah Becker each had 14. Johnson had just one hitting error.
“I thought Zent had a tremendous will and drive to win, and I also thought (Rogalla) was the X factor in that match as well,” Hegerle said. “Johnson also had some nice swings at the ball and good blocks, which was nice to see.”
Kelsey Deragisch’s 34 assists were team-leading. Katie Lee piled up 25 digs.

The Jimmies had enough gas in the tank to make the opening set competitive, falling 25-23.
It was all Cougars from there, however, as they closed it out 25-14 and 25-18.
“San Marcos is a really tough team,” Hegerle said. “We played them after an emotional five-set match. I did think we competed hard in the first set, but then we were a little flat. We were pretty worn out by that point.”
The Jimmies hit just .173. San Marcos had two block solos and 12 more assisted.
Rogalla led again in kills with nine. Becker added seven. Lee had a match-high 12 digs.
Rogalla, Zent and Lee were named to the all-tournament team. Rogalla had a team-leading 45 kills in four matches. Zent had 41 kills total in four matches. Lee amassed 67 digs.
The Jimmies, now 27-8, find out where they play next today when the national tournament pairings are released.
