MacMillan scores in overtime to lift UND past UMD

GRAND FORKS (AP) — Mark MacMillan scored with 34 seconds left in overtime to give North Dakota a 4-3 win over Minnesota-Duluth Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

MacMillan’s one-timer past UMD goalie Matt McNeely at 4:26 was the only shot on goal by UND in the extra period. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, had four shots on goal.

UMD took a 3-1 lead with six minutes left in the first period, but North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol stayed with goalie Zane Gothberg .

“It was back and forth. I’m proud of the way our guys stuck with it,” Hakstol said. “We dug a hole, but our guys gave us a chance to dig our way out of it.”

UMD’s Jake Hendrickson and Mike Seidel scored early and North Dakota’s Danny Kristo had a goal as the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead less than four minutes into the game.

MacMillan scored his first goal of the game at 5:53 of the third period to tie it 3-3. The goal completed a comeback by North Dakota (5-3-2, 3-1-2) from a 3-1 deficit.

Gothberg made four of his 28 saves in overtime. Kristo assisted on two goals, including the game-winner as UND picked up its first Saturday win of the season.

MacMillan assisted on a goal to finish with three points and Corban Knight had two assists.

Tony Cameranesi had a goal and assist for the Bulldogs (2-5-3, 0-4-3). McNeely made 26 saves for the Bulldogs, who are still waiting for their first WCHA win.

The two teams skated to a 4-4 tie on Friday.

“To get a game-winner in overtime is special for our guys,” Hakstol said. “It’s just a big win getting two points in the league.”
