The Jimmies ran into a buzz saw Saturday in Helena, Mont.
Carroll College scored 11 of the first 12 points in the match, setting the tone for an uphill struggle all day for Jamestown College.
The Saints rarely trailed in the NAIA opening round match up against the Jimmies, rolling to a 3-0 sweep.
Carroll (25-9) earned a trip to Sioux City, Iowa for second-round action of the national tournament.
It was a disappointing end to an otherwise stellar season for the Jimmies as they finished with a 27-9 record.
“I feel really bad for (the seniors),” Hegerle said. “They really wanted to make it to Sioux City. ... It was a special season, and certainly they had a lot to do with it.”
The Saints led 11-1 in the opening set on their way to a 25-18 win in game 1.
The Jimmies did not get their first lead of the day until a kill by freshman Alaina Brown made it 16-15 in the second set. The Jimmies scored just three more points in the frame, however, as Carroll went up 2-0.
The Jimmies had a brief lead early in the third, but Carroll got up 10-6 and never looked back, limiting the Jimmies to just 17 points in the set.
Sarah Becker led the way in kills (8) and blocks (4). The Jimmies struggled hitting with 26 errors and their .060 percentage was well below their season average. Carroll, by contrast, hit .233.
Katie Lee had 19 digs. Kaitlyn Rogalla and Katie Zent each had six kills. Kaia Buck had 16 assists.
“Three conference championships, two trips to nationals — (the seniors) have been pretty special the last four years,” Hegerle said. “They’re a huge part of that.
“We’re not gonna replace them. You never do. The hardest thing for them, and me as a coach, is just that the journey is over, because it was an outstanding season.”
