The United States and Mexico have agreed to rewrite rules on sharing water from the Colorado River, capping a five-year effort to create a united front against future droughts.

CORONADO, Calif. (AP) — The United States and Mexico have agreed to rewrite rules on sharing water from the Colorado River, capping a five-year effort to create a united front against future droughts.

Representatives of the two countries signed the pact Tuesday in Coronado, near San Diego.

The far-reaching agreement allows Mexico to store water north of the border in Lake Mead. Mexico agreed to surrender some of its share of the river during shortages.
