An onslaught of goals in the first period put the Jamestown High School boys hockey team in too big of a hole.
Grafton-Park River scored four goals in the opening stanza on its way to a 7-0 win in both teams’ season opener Tuesday night at Wilson Arena.
“Any time you’re on the road and you can get a couple of goals early, it builds confidence,” said G-PR coach Scott Peterson, whose team finished runner-up at state last season. “We moved our feet. … We beat them to the puck.”
Jade Miller got it started just 1 minute, 18 seconds into the contest with a flick of the wrist on a pass from Zach Feltman. Zach Peterson, who also assisted on the first goal, followed with a short-handed goal on a breakaway 4 minutes later after the Spoilers got called for tripping.
Jamestown looked to cut the deficit to one after it appeared the Blue Jays had scored on a scrum around the net. However, the officials called it off, saying it was kicked in.
Keeping the Jays scoreless only fueled the Spoilers’ fire, as Brett Longtin sent a pass from the left circle to the right pipe, where Ben Thompson converted on the glove side to put the Spartans up 3-0 with 2:52 to go in the first. Peter Hills found the back of the net 10 seconds later from Longtin.
“You look at the second (period), there was a big difference in regards to actually wanting the puck,” Jamestown coach Matt Stockert said. “I thought the kids did a better job in a lot of areas. That’s a pretty good team over there.”
Miller and Cole Rehovsky both added girls in the second, the latter coming on the power play. Thompson scored his second goal in the third.
“We just didn’t act like we wanted to be a part of (the game) tonight,” Stockert said.
The Spoilers’ goals came against senior goalie Ben Walz in the first two periods. Senior Tygh Yatskis came in midway through the second and held Grafton-Park River to one score the rest of the way. Both finished with 20 saves.
Stockert indicated Yatskis will start when the Jays visit Hazen-Beulah on Saturday, though he noted nothing is set in stone.
“It’s always ongoing,” he said. “We have a good idea who’s starting on Saturday based on tonight.”
