Bismarck Century wrestlers top Blue Jays

The Blue Jay matmen put together an impressive run against the Patriots in Bismarck on Tuesday night.

Jamestown’s Jaden Horsted (132 pounds), Mitch Ova (138) and Zane Braun (152) all picked up pins, while Ryan Hillerud scored a 7-3 decision at 145 to give the Blue Jays 21 straight points. But in the end Jamestown was unable to pick up the swing matches they needed, as Bismarck Century rolled 49-27.

“We came in thinking if we could win a couple of those swing matches, we’d be 7-7 with them on paper,” JHS coach Greg White said, concerning head-to-head matchups with the Patriots. “We were able to win five of them.”

The Blue Jays were in a 21-0 hole to start the match, after Century picked up a pair of pins at 120 and 126, a decision at 113 and six points via forfeit at 106, before Horsted got the Jays on the board with a third-period pin over Matthew Elder.

“We were down quite a bit and Jaden hit the mat at 132 and got us started with a pin, and then we just kind of went on a roll,” White said.

But after Jamestown’s spurt in the middle, the only points they’d score the rest of the way out was at 182, where Eathan Gumke pinned Chandler Aarfor in the second.

“We have some pretty young guys out there. We were open at 106, and then Paxton Mewes, Jakob Browning and Dante Dillingham are all freshman before we get into some of our more experienced wrestlers,” White said. “We’ll be fine there, we’re just a little green (at the lighter weight classes).”

The Blue Jays travel to Belcourt to face Turtle Mountain High School on Nov. 29.
