The Stutsman County Commission rescinded the Fire Emergency/Burn Ban Proclamation Tuesday that had initially been declared back on Sept. 4.
The burn ban was in effect only when the North Dakota Rangeland Fire Danger Index was in the very high or extreme categories and/or a Red Flag Warning had been issued for Stutsman County.
During the two months and two weeks that the burn restrictions were in place, there were only eight days where the fire danger index was either in the very high or extreme categories.
However, on Nov. 9, the National Weather Service discontinued the issuing of the daily fire danger index for the winter months. With no current fire danger index information, there was no longer any basis to determine whether or not burn restrictions should be in place for a particular day, which is why the emergency proclamation was rescinded.
During the winter months, the Stutsman County Commission will be looking at whether some type of burning ordinance should be considered in lieu of declaring fire emergencies and burn bans on a fairly regular basis.
