Winter weather advisory issued for Thanksgiving Day

The National Weather Service has released a winter weather advisory for northern North Dakota, starting at midnight tonight and ending Thanksgiving evening.

According to the NWS, a strong cold front will sweep through northern North Dakota Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. Ahead of the cold front, people should expect a wintry mix of snow and light freezing rain late Wednesday night, changing to all snow Thursday morning.

Brisk northwest winds of up to 35 miles per hour will result in areas of blowing snow. Total snowfall accumulation through Thursday evening will range from one to two inches in Crosby, Williston, Minot, Rugby, Belcourt, Sherwood, Harvey, Carrington and Jamestown.

Holiday travelers along and north of U.S. Highway 2 should be prepared for dangerous driving conditions, and allow extra time in reaching destinations because roadways will be slick. Drivers are warned to expect reduced visibilities in blowing snow, which will also complicate holiday travel.

The winter weather advisory includes Sheridan, Wells, Foster, and Stutsman counties, as well as others.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol advises travelers to remain alert and avoid using cruise control in wintry driving conditions.
