JFD responds to apartment fire

The Jamestown Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at an apartment building at 8:46 p.m. Wednesday.

The Jamestown Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at an apartment building at 8:46 p.m. Wednesday.

While the fire department’s ready squad was on the way to 409 Fourth St. NE, the fire department was informed that the call was larger, so the rest of the firefighters were called as well, said Fire Chief Jim Reuther.

The fire remains under investigation, but Reuther said it was possible that some plumbing work earlier in the day had sparked the fire, which began on the first floor of the apartment building and then spread up to the second floor in the wall.

The building wasn’t burned down, but two apartments received extensive damage, Reuther said. Residents left the building and stayed elsewhere as the heat and water had to be turned off. The building’s owner began working on getting the heat back on Friday, Reuther said, but he wasn’t sure if it had been finished.
