AAUW works on various projects

American Association of University Women strives to advance equality for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. During the past two and a half months the Jamestown branch of AAUW has been advocates, educating and doing many other things for the Jamestown community.

Starting in late August, the group started its national nonpartisan campaign of GOTV called “It’s my vote: I will be heard!” The purposes of this campaign were too educate, and tell millennial-aged women the importance of why they should have voted in this most recent election. AAUW’s main goal was to get more college students at Jamestown College and Valley City State University out to vote whether through early or absentee voting in their home state or voting locally. They also strived to get more people in the community to become more educated about the ballot and also to get out and vote.

On Halloween night AAUW set up shop at both of its sponsored locations in Jamestown, its book bookstore located in the Buffalo Mall and also the schoolhouse located in Frontier Village. At both locations members estimate that they gave out more than 1,000 items. These items ranged anywhere from books, pencils and animal crackers for the children to voting reminders for the adults. Members were also active in the community knocking on doors reminding people to go vote. After the election was over, the Jamestown branch of AAUW considered the voter turnout to be very good. AAUW estimated that on Election Day more than 100 college students voted in Jamestown and many more voted outside of the Jamestown area.

The Jamestown branch of AAUW will have its next meeting at Grizzly’s in Jamestown at 5:30 p.m. Thursday as a holiday get-together and will not be meeting again until after the New Year.
