The Jamestown High School wrestling team had a busy day in the finals on Saturday.

Though the Blue Jays finished fifth out of eight teams with 119.5 points, they went for 3-for-3 in the finals to tie for the most champions with tournament winner Moorhead (Minn.) and runner-up Minot.

Leading the way was defending state champion Zane Braun, who made the 152-pound weight class his personal playground. He pinned all three of his opponents including Minot’s Brian Rabe in the finals.

“He had a no-stop attitude,” JHS coach Greg White said. “He pretty much dominated the way we like to see.”

Paxton Mewes had a similar day, moving from 113 to 120 and dominating. He pinned his first two opponents in the first period and beat Keenan Kvamme of Carrington by 13-1 major decision in the finals.

“It was on a suggestion from he and his dad (to move up) and I looked at what they were talking about,” said White, whose team visits Bismarck High on Tuesday. “It made sense, so he moved up. It didn’t bump anyone out for us. It paid off.”

Jaden Horsted also captured top honors. To get to the finals, he had two first-period pins and edged Moorhead’s Jacob Rositas 3-1. He topped Carrington’s Walker Carr by 3-2 decision for the title.

But what likely bumped the Jays down in the standings was the fact that they had no runner-up or third-place finishes. Ryan Hillerud (145), Brandyn Harr (160), Caleb Ellingson (170), Eathan Gumke (182) and Triston Shipley (195) each placed fourth. Mitch Ova (138) and Kyle Anderson (220) took fifth.

Moorhead scored 148 points to slip by Minot (143.5) and Fargo Davies (137). Carrington took fourth with 132.5 points, meaning the top four were separated by just 15.5 points.

“We knew it was gonna be a pretty good tournament, especially when you bring Moorhead in,” White said.

Carrington had two champions in Lucas Brown (113) and Cordell Schroeder (285), both of whom are defending Class B state champions. The Cardinals put four in the finals, though Kvamme (120) and Carr (132) fell to Jamestown wrestlers. Matt Neumiller (106), Chaz Bauer (126), Patrick Freeman (138) placed third, while Austin Schuldheisz (220) took fourth.
