ND House Dems choose Onstad as floor leader
North Dakota House Democrats have picked Parshall Rep. Kenton Onstad as their new floor leader.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota House Democrats have picked Parshall Rep. Kenton Onstad as their new floor leader.
Onstad was challenging the incumbent leader, Fullerton Rep. Jerry Kelsh, for the job. But Kelsh decided not to seek re-election, and Onstad was unopposed for the leader's job Monday.
House Democrats also chose Grand Forks Rep. Corey Mock as their assistant leader Monday. Mock did not have any opposition.
House Democrats lost two seats in last month's elections. Republicans now have 71 House seats, and Democrats have only 23.
Onstad says one of the party's challenges is to build up its numbers in the Capitol. Republicans have two-thirds control in both the House and Senate.
The North Dakota Legislature starts a three-day session Monday to do organizational work. The regular session begins Jan. 8.
