Mary M. Martin, 91, Bismarck, died December 4, 2012, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm Friday, December 7, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm Thursday, December 6, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a Catholic Daughters Rosary will begin at 6:30 pm and a vigil at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mary was born January 6, 1921, in Barnes County, ND, the daughter of George and Caroline (Millner) Doll. She was raised and attended school in Fingal, ND. She worked in Valley City, ND, for several years and moved to Bismarck in 1945. On February 17, 1947, Mary married Edward R. “Pepper” Martin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck.
Mary earned her GED in 1971. Over the years, she worked at several offices in Bismarck as a bookkeeper, with her last employers being Klein Lumber Company and Dunahey’s Art Media. Mary retired in 1984.
While her daughters were growing up, Mary was active in Girl Scouts. She volunteered at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church and Cathedral School as well as at St. Mary’s High School Carnival. She belonged to Cathedral parish and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for over 50 years. She was a charter member of the local Teamster’s Retirees.
Mary enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, walking, bird watching, reading, traveling, baking, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and spending time with her family.
Mary is survived by her five daughters, Patty (Vern) Thorp, Michele Martin, both of Bismarck, Deb (TJ) Hopfauf, Mandan, Alberta (Mike) Swartz and Carol (Don) Redmann, both of Jamestown, and her three sons, Tom, Valley City, Ken (Bev), Fitchburg, WI, and Bill (Paula), Bismarck; her daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Martin, Bismarck; 10 grandsons, five granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; one brother, Herb (Sharon) Doll, Sioux Falls, SD; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Edward; her son, Richard “Dick”; her parents; brother, Raymond; sister, Tillie; half-sister, Laura Flasch; and half-brother, John Koller.
Mary requested that no flowers be sent, but that memorials may be given to: Bismarck Area Catholic Education Foundation, Home on the Range, Anne Carlson School or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
