Chester Johnson

Chester Ludwig Johnson, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on October 22, 2012 at the Kentridge Elderly Living Center in Kent, WA. The son of Ludwig and Emma Johnson, Chet was born May 20, 1923 on the family farm near Pine City, MN. He graduated from Pine City High School in 1941.

The son of Ludwig and Emma Johnson, Chet was born May 20, 1923 on the family farm near Pine City, MN. He graduated from Pine City High School in 1941. He attended the University of Minnesota, returning home in 1943 to help his father run the farm. In 1944 he enlisted in the Army and served for two years, including a year in the Phillipines. After his discharge in 1946, he finished his degree at the University of Minnesota. Chet and Helen were married on June 13, 1948 at the Greenfield Church in Harmony, MN.

Chet and Helen taught school in Kenyon, MN until 1950 when they purchased a small farm on the outskirts of Harmony and started a poultry farm and hatchery. In 1955 they moved to St. Paul, MN where Chet attended Luther Theological Seminary. After graduating in 1958, he served as pastor of Lutheran congregations in Rugby, ND (1958-1963), Jamestown, ND (1963-1974), Copenhagen, Denmark (1974-1977), and Astoria, Oregon (1980-1989). In 1989 Chet and Helen retired in Kent, WA.

Chet is survived by his four children: Douglas (Jo) Johnson, Fargo, ND; Peggy (Dwight) Nakatsu, Bellevue, WA; Paul (Jan) Johnson, Fargo, ND; and David (Anna Copley) Johnson, Kent, WA.

Chet was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers - Mauritz and Virgil.
